Alice Stewart (b. 1972, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) is a ceramic artist based in Mill Valley, California. Raised in McLean, Virginia, by a Portuguese- American father and a Bolivian mother, she has lived and worked in New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Paris, Munich, and Cochabamba, Bolivia. Her diverse experiences inform a practice rooted in form and tradition.

Working primarily in stoneware, Alice specializes in traditional coiling technique—an ancient hand-building method that predates the invention of the potter’s wheel. Favoring minimal tools, she prioritizes a direct, tactile relationship with clay, integrating carving and sculptural elements to create work that is both grounded and expressive.

Alice’s work is deeply inspired by the natural world—especially botanical forms. She is drawn to the quiet beauty of leaves, seed pods, and branches, and often echo these shapes in her sculptures. Symbols frequently appear in Alice’s pieces, offering a sense of story or mystery.
